ChamberMaxx by Conteches Installed at Republic Beverage in Jefferson, LA

If you’ve driven past the s-turn in Jefferson Highway near Ochsner Hospital’s main campus in the past few months, you’ve no doubt noticed construction. But did you notice the ChamberMaxx®?

Of the many projects going on in the area, one stands out for an innovative drainage solutions hiding just beneath the surface of a gleaming new parking lot and warehouse at Republic National Distributing Company.

QSM provided Durr Heavy Construction with a ChamberMaxx system at Republic Beverage to meet parish drainage regulations and mitigate runoff on this busy traffic corridor. Republic National Distributing, a locally owned, nationwide firm, is always on the lookout for ways to improve its service and logistics. Republic built a new warehouse, parking lot and marshaling area at its Jefferson facility, and it called for a massive amount of concrete and steel.

The footprint of this building, along with the large slab area, and its proximity to Jefferson Highway (U.S. Hwy. 90) required design engineers to come up with a clever solution to mitigate issues that would otherwise arise from stormwater runoff.

Enter QSM with the ChamberMaxx® Stormwater Chamber System.

“When Durr called to tell us about this project, we knew exactly what to do,” said Jonathan Wilhite of QSM. “Engineers had specified an infiltration drainage system, and ChamberMaxx, by Conteches is a product we specialize in supplying to contractors across Louisiana.”

ChamberMaxx® is an underground detention system with an open-bottomed infiltration chamber that meets strict requirements with regards to stormwater runoff reduction. It maximizes available land space by providing economic infiltration below grade, and utilizes high storage volumes in a small footprint.

Its low profile make it an ideal solution for sites with shallow footprints. In the case of Republic Beverage, … the ChamberMaxx® system was installed right underneath the new parking lot running along the s-turn at Jefferson Highway.

“It’s my first time working with the product,” said Danny LaGrange, of Durr Heavy Construction, “and I think it’s great. It was easy to work with. It went in much quicker than we anticipated, and you can easily see how it works to handle high volumes of water from the heavy rains we get in South Louisiana.”

Morphy-Makofsky provided engineering design on this project, which began in August, 2016, and was completed by the end of November. ChamberMaxx® was a key component. QSM also supplied A-2000 PVC, catch basins, Schedule 40 pipe, and fittings.

As metropolitan and suburban areas experience growth and expansive commercial building projects, QSM says calls for an detention / retention and infiltration systems are becoming more frequent.

LaGrange concurs, “a lot of people are asking about it because as more places become concrete jungles this is going to be the way to handle excessive runoff.”
